Analyse how the friendship between Zero and Stanley grows. List up the different situations and explain how the relationship changes.
At first, Stanley didn’t have anything to do with Zero. He is a little boy and everyone say that he is stupid and that he doesn’t get anything straight in his head. He says that he likes to dig holes. It’s is also strange that Mr. Pendanski told him, that he could be someone, that he could do something useful, that he isn’t worthless.
The reader doesn’t know what was meant, just later, when he goes on with reading.
Later, Magnet has stolen the sunflower seeds from Mr. Sir, while he was filling the canteens of the boys. When Mr. Sir went away, he shares them with the others.
Stanley doesn’t want to eat them and when it was his turn to take some seeds out, the sack fell in the hole.
So Stanley had to go to the Warden. When he went back, his hole was finished. Zero did it.
He doesn’t know why Zero should do this. When he asks him, he also doesn’t get a clear statement. Even though he offers Zero some lessons in reading and writing. So they make a deal: Stanley has to teach him writing and reading and Zero continue digging Stanley’s hole one hour a week.
After a while, Stanley realizes that Zero isn’t as stupid as the others say. He is very good at calculating and very fast, too.
The reader will think, that they will be good friends…
