“Later that night, as he lay on his cot” (p.82) Stanley thinks about the day… Write a diary entry for Stanley
diary entry: start with “Dear diary…” remember: a diary is a personal document, it is very subjective and sometimes emotional. Stanley’s hidden thoughts and ideas would be in an entry… Write at least 100 words.
Dear diary,
Today was the craziest day ever! My day began with a strange noise. When I opened my eyes, I realized that it came from Squid. He was crying! I wanted to help him, but he shouted at me and so I left him alone with his “allergy”, although I think he is homesick, because he is missing his family or something like that.
The next part of the day was the same than usual: We got our nasty breakfast and had to go out for digging the condemned holes like everyday!
But things changed, when Mr. Sir arrived with his truck to give us our water, which is not very much, Magnet has stolen unnoticeable his sunflower seeds. He wanted to share them with everyone, but I wasn’t in the mood for more trouble. So I didn’t want to eat some. But unluckily, the sack fell in my hole! Why am I so stupid! I couldn’t catch them!
And the next sound I heard was the truck. Shoot! I had to hide the seeds. And I had to do it fast! So I put the dirt over them, but it was useless. Mr. Sir had seen them before I could do anything against it.
He took me to the truck and we drove to the Warden’s cabin. It was a relief to sit in the truck, where fresh air blows to your face and you had to do nothing except for sitting their and enjoying the break as long as you can.
At the Warden’s cabin, it was not worse. The cabin was air-conditioned, and there was a television, too. It must be an easygoing job.
After Mr. Sir had told the Warden what had happened, she punished him, because he disturbed her for a reason in which she was not interested in:
She protracted a dark-red nail polish on her left hand and strucked him across the face. It wasn’t a normal nail polish. It was Rattlesnake venom! How could someone be so cruel!
I never told anyone what had happened to Mr. Sir. I didn’t want him to get mad at me. Luckily he won’t die! That was the most important thing.
When I went back, my hole was finished. I found out, that it was Zero. Because of that I offered him some lessons at reading and writing because I know, that he couldn’t read and write.
We made a good deal: He will dig my hole everyday for an hour and I will give him those lessons. I think that is a good deal.
Now I can sleep and hope, that Mr. Sir will get better the next days…
Stanley

Analyse how the friendship between Zero and Stanley grows. List up the different situations and explain how the relationship changes.
At first, Stanley didn’t have anything to do with Zero. He is a little boy and everyone say that he is stupid and that he doesn’t get anything straight in his head. He says that he likes to dig holes. It’s is also strange that Mr. Pendanski told him, that he could be someone, that he could do something useful, that he isn’t worthless.
The reader doesn’t know what was meant, just later, when he goes on with reading.
Later, Magnet has stolen the sunflower seeds from Mr. Sir, while he was filling the canteens of the boys. When Mr. Sir went away, he shares them with the others.
Stanley doesn’t want to eat them and when it was his turn to take some seeds out, the sack fell in the hole.
So Stanley had to go to the Warden. When he went back, his hole was finished. Zero did it.
He doesn’t know why Zero should do this. When he asks him, he also doesn’t get a clear statement. Even though he offers Zero some lessons in reading and writing. So they make a deal: Stanley has to teach him writing and reading and Zero continue digging Stanley’s hole one hour a week.
After a while, Stanley realizes that Zero isn’t as stupid as the others say. He is very good at calculating and very fast, too.
The reader will think, that they will be good friends…

Dear mom,
I like my first day in the camp. I finally made some friends now! We have been out on the lake all day, so that I’m so exhausted now. Our caretakers are funny. They were in the water with us and told us how we can swim faster or longer.
It’s very hot here, but I have no prolem with the letter, because when I am thirsty, I can just go to the lake and drink some water
You don’t need to worry like you did before I went away. I have fun here like I have never had before! Time will pass very fast. You will see me very soon!
Don’t visit me. It’s unnecessary, because it will cost money and you will need it for more important things. And here, there are absoloutely no telephones. Luckily, you gave me the writing paper.
I will see you soon, okay mom?
I love you,
Stanley

I don’t think Boot Camps help children to be a better person, because it’s very unnecessary! Children, who were send at those camps, will be devilled, although they are kids.
So they become more aggressive and will use more violence against other people.
They think that their parents want to get rid of them, because they are really, really exhausting!
I would never send my children to one of those horrible camps. I would either send them to a therapy or something like that! Because that’s much better to “turn someones mind” and kids were not treated like that.
So I think Boot Camps are useless! They should be abolished!

Try out wordpress: Write down your first impression of Stanley, the main character in “Holes”.
Stanley is a boy, who has to pay for something, although he is innocent. But he doesn’t give anyone else the blame, so I think he is a nice boy.
He is also friendly to the boys, who were in the camp, although he doesn’t know what they have done to be there and what their characters are. That’s because he avoids conflicts and other unnecessary things.
So my first impression of Stanley is, that he is a normal person. He wants to keep things simple, because he doesn’t want to change something in his “normal” life. In the end, I like Stanley, because he is sympathetic.
